Last weekend of September is Jammed Pack Weekend of Activity

Where do I begin?  Bring out your boots and hats to enjoy Lewisville has Western Days, eat, drink and enjoy German music in McKinney for Oktoberfest, Keller has How the West Was Won 5K run and Wild, Wild West festival and Keller Farmers Market,  Southlake is hosting the North Texas Walk for PkD, Dragon Band March-a-thon and Carroll ISD Emerald Belles workshop and the Southlake Department of Public Safety is having a Safety Fair.  Admission is free on Saturday to the Dallas Museum of Art which is the opening day for Encountering Space.  Denton Police Association is hosting it's annual MidNight Hoops 2010 tournament which allows middle school to college level folks to play basketball in the later hours of the evening.  That tournament takes place at Billy Ryan High School and is free.  As you can see, there is plenty to do the weekend of 9/24-9/27 in the DFW area.

Johnny Appleseed Made a Stop in Roanoke

Have you ever tasted an apple fresh off the tree?  Having grown up in Johnny Appleseed country along Lake Ontario in New York State, apple picking time was a true delight to the taste buds.  We had loads of apple farms and were able to pick our own, drink freshly squeezed apple cider (there is nothing that compares to that taste in my book), apple milkshakes, apple butter, apple fritters, apple pies...you name it apple and it was there.  Local apples to be found and picked in the North Texas area?  Amazing!  Henrietta Creek Orchard is located in North Tarrant County (west end of Lake Grapevine) has apples to pick from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday.  The orchard is just east of Alliance Airport at 14255 Old Denton Rd., Roanoke.  It is suggested that you call before you head out because there are factors, such as weather, that would impact the picking schedule.  The phone number is 817-439-3202.  Happy Apple Picking!

Up, Up & Away

Sweet memories remain vivid of our champagne hot air balloon ride over the Sonoran desert in Phoenix, AZ.  Here's the good news -  there is no need to travel as far as Phoenix to enjoy the quiet and lofted presence you feel through ballooning.  Plano is offering the 2010 Plano Balloon Festival the weekend of September 17-19 at Oak Point Park (2801 E. Spring Creek Pkwy, Plano).  General admission is $5/person for a one time admission ($8/person for two time admission).  Discounted admission of $4/person between 9 am - 3 pm.  They are even offering a $1 discount off admissions for seniors (65 and older).  Children under 36" get free admission.  You can park and ride the "Balloon Flyer" Dart Rail to the festival from Parker Rd. station.  Buses run continuously from Collin College (Spring Creek Campus), Oak Point Recreation Center (Jupiter and Spring Creek) and other convenient locations.

Getting Old - Hogwash!

This chipper group of 50+ folks work out on a regular basis at Frisco Senior Center.  This facility presents a fabulous way for 50+ people within the Frisco community to socialize, exercise, computer train, play pool, play ping pong, watch movies, do arts and craft projects, learn about nutrition and eating a clean diet, participate in book club discussion with it's handy loaner library on premises and go on any number of special trips and events throughout the Metroplex.  They recently offered a bus trip and personal tour of the new Cowboy stadium.  What a great facility, wonderful and caring staff for seniors.
Frisco is one well planned community with a great vision for the future!  The western edge of Frisco is located by Lake Lewisville.  Check it out!

Visit By Congressman Burgess at GLAR

Congressman Burgess joined the Greater Lewisville Association of Realtors to receive the support of local realtors on behalf of the work he has done to further homeowner property rights within his district.  Fortunately, I was at GLAR for a class on blogging and was able to not only see him and take a picture of him but also shook his hand.

Storms Are Brewing

Wow, I just had to turn on the lights in my office.  Yeah!  Storms over Lake Lewisville are brewing.  We certainly need some rain to begin to refill the lake.  Not many folks know but daily the Army Corp of Engineers can release large amounts of water from the lake in an effort to keep floods under control in the DFW area along with providing power sources for towns like Grand Prairie.  Recently, Dick and I traveled down the Trinity River in kayaks with some wonderful folks.   This was our first time in kayaks so we were a bit apprehensive but our guides, Mike Swopes and crew, put our minds at ease immediately.  We started very close to the water releasing area of the lake.  It was a great trip and we learned a lot in the process.  We are so close to many of natures beauties within the Metroplex it is worth exploring!  If you are interested, www.kayakpower.com is a great site to learn more about group kayak trips in the DFW area.
